Going up from the Romanesque church to the Castle of Romena, on our right we have this view. The tower in the center, higher up, is that of the prisons. We will see and describe it later. The lower tower, on the right, is the Torre della Gabella, the only one left of those that were on the outer ring of walls. This tower was used to control the passage on the road where Fonte Branda is located, which we will see on the next page. Towers and walls were destroyed in the 17th and 18th centuries by the people of the area. They represented a comfortable quarry of already worked stone. In this southern part of the castle, very close to the Romanesque church dedicated to San Pietro, at the end of the 12th century the Guidi had built the Spedale di Santa Maria Penitente to offer hospitality to the pilgrims who passed through here. There is no longer any trace of this structure.
